Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Strikes Davao Oriental, Philippines; Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck near Manay town in Davao Oriental province, Mindanao, on October 10, 2025, prompting a tsunami warning for nearby coastal areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10–20 kilometers along the Philippine Trench, generating concern for potential aftershocks and structural damage.

Tsunami Advisory and Coastal Impact

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued an alert for areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, including parts of Indonesia and Palau. Waves of up to 3 meters above normal tide levels were anticipated on Philippine coasts near the epicenter. The warning was later lifted after only minor fluctuations were observed, with maximum wave height recorded at 30 centimeters in Tandag, Surigao del Sur.

Casualties and Damage

The earthquake has reportedly caused two confirmed fatalities in Mati City, including patients who suffered heart attacks, and two deaths from a landslide in Pantukan, Davao de Oro. Over 50 students were hospitalized for shock or dizziness. Infrastructure damage included cracked buildings, a high school, a hospital, and minor damage at Davao International Airport, which remained operational.

Aftershocks and Ongoing Seismic Activity

PHIVOLCS reported at least 266 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 1.3 to 6.9, with the strongest occurring at 7:12 PM PHT. Residents were advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation protocols if necessary.

Government Response

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that search-and-rescue operations are underway, coordinated by local government units, the Philippine National Police, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Authorities are also conducting damage assessments and providing assistance to affected communities.

Context: Seismic Vulnerability

This earthquake follows a magnitude 6.9 quake in Cebu province on September 30, 2025, which killed at least 75 people and caused significant displacement. The events underscore the Philippines’ location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The archipelago also faces about 20 typhoons annually, amplifying the challenges of disaster preparedness and response.
