NIMS Robotic Surgeries Cross 1,000 Mark in Under Three Years, Over 90% Performed Free

NIMS Robotic Surgeries Cross 1,000 Mark in a major achievement for Telangana’s public healthcare sector, as the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has completed 1,000 robotic surgeries in less than three years. More than 90 percent of these advanced procedures were performed free of cost under the Aarogyasri and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) schemes, making world-class treatment accessible to thousands of patients.
Hospital officials said the milestone reflects the rapid expansion of robotic-assisted surgery at NIMS and the growing trust patients place in the institute for advanced medical care. Robotic surgery offers greater precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery compared to conventional surgical procedures.
According to NIMS, the Urology Department performed the highest number of robotic procedures with 590 surgeries, followed by the Surgical Gastroenterology Department with 248 surgeries and the Surgical Oncology Department with 162 surgeries. These procedures covered complex conditions involving the prostate, urinary bladder, kidneys, liver, pancreas, intestines, uterus, ovaries, and several types of cancer.
The institute had earlier created history by performing South India’s first robotic kidney transplant in the government sector, strengthening its reputation as one of the country’s leading centres for advanced robotic and organ transplant surgeries.
NIMS Director Prof. Dr. Rahul Devaraj credited the achievement to the collective efforts of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, operation theatre teams, technicians, and other supporting departments. He said teamwork and the dedication of healthcare professionals played a key role in reaching this landmark.
Congratulating the medical team, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha praised the institute for setting a new benchmark in government healthcare. They also noted that NIMS recently completed 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries, further establishing itself as one of India’s premier organ transplant centres.
The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening robotic surgery services in public hospitals. Besides NIMS, robotic surgeries are already being performed at MNJ Cancer Hospital, while advanced robotic operation theatres are planned for the upcoming TIMS hospitals, Gandhi Hospital, and the new Osmania General Hospital.
