A protest erupted at the Sathavahana Boys Hostel of Resonance Junior College in Madhapur on Tuesday night, July 7, after students alleged that cockroaches were found in the food served at the hostel mess. According to police, nearly 20 to 30 students confronted the hostel management around 9:30 pm, expressing their anger over the alleged poor quality and unhygienic food served in the hostel. The dispute escalated, leading to a tense situation on the campus.
Local reports claimed that some protesting students damaged the hostel property, including breaking window panes during the commotion. However, the Madhapur police clarified that no formal complaint regarding vandalism had been filed.
Speaking to the media, Madhapur Station House Officer (SHO) D. Krishna Mohan said that police personnel reached the hostel after receiving a Dial 100 emergency call.
“An officer was sent after we received a Dial 100 call, and the situation was brought under control. No complaint has been received from either the management or the students,” the SHO said.
Since no official complaint has been lodged by either side, no case has been registered in connection with the incident.
Growing Concerns Over Hostel Food Safety
The protest has once again highlighted concerns over the quality and hygiene of food served in educational institution hostels across Telangana. Students have repeatedly raised complaints about unhygienic conditions and poor food quality, with several incidents of food contamination reported in recent months.
The latest incident comes just a day after 17 students of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Residential School in Birkoor, Kamareddy district, were hospitalised after allegedly consuming contaminated food served in their hostel.
According to officials, around 30 students complained of vomiting and discomfort after dinner on July 5. Of them, 12 students developed severe symptoms, including stomach pain and diarrhoea, and were admitted to a nearby hospital the same night. On the following morning, five more students experienced similar symptoms and also required medical treatment.

Need for Stricter Monitoring
The repeated reports of contaminated food and unhygienic hostel kitchens have renewed calls for stricter inspections and better monitoring of food preparation in residential educational institutions. Students and parents have urged authorities to conduct regular hygiene checks and ensure that hostel kitchens comply with food safety norms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
