Israel Begins Troop Withdrawal from Gaza Under Ceasefire Deal with Hamas
Israeli forces began withdrawing from key areas of Gaza on Friday, October 10, following a historic ceasefire agreement with Hamas. The move allows displaced residents to return to parts of the enclave and enables rescue teams to reach areas that were previously inaccessible due to ongoing conflict.
Troop Movements and Security Situation
According to reports from Reuters, in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, some Israeli troops pulled back from the eastern border areas, though tank shelling and sporadic gunfire were still reported. In Nusseirat Camp, central Gaza, Israeli soldiers dismantled positions and moved east toward Israel, while other forces remained amid continued clashes. Along the Mediterranean coastal road into Gaza City, Israeli troops partially withdrew, enabling residents to attempt returning to the urban center, though ongoing gunfire limited movement.
Rescue and Recovery Operations
Rescue teams and medics have begun accessing neighborhoods that were previously unreachable, recovering at least 10 bodies from prior strikes. The withdrawal has provided much-needed relief and allowed for humanitarian activities to resume in parts of the densely populated enclave.
Hostage Release Agreement
Earlier on Friday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed government approval of a framework for the release of all hostages, both living and deceased. Under the ceasefire terms:
Hamas will release all living hostages within days
Israel will withdraw the majority of its forces from Gaza
A prisoner exchange will take place between Palestinian detainees and remaining hostages
Currently, around 20 of the 48 hostages are believed to be alive.
Context and Aftermath
The ceasefire halts a devastating two-year conflict that began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, triggering regional instability, worldwide protests, and allegations of atrocities that Israel denies. While the truce has been welcomed with relief and cautious optimism, uncertainty remains about the complete cessation of hostilities.
The agreement marks a significant step toward reducing civilian suffering and restoring humanitarian access, though both sides remain vigilant amid residual tension and sporadic violence.
