Panipuri Makes Software Engineer Hospitalized in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, September 13

A 22-year-old software engineer from Hyderabad was hospitalized for a month after contracting a severe case of hepatitis A from eating street panipuri, highlighting the risks of consuming unhygienic food and water.

The patient was treated at Aster Prime Hospital, where doctors observed symptoms including jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin), nausea, vomiting, lethargy, stomach discomfort, and dark urine. Blood tests confirmed severe hepatitis A, with elevated liver enzymes and positive anti-HAV IgM antibodies, according to Dr. Kaluvala Harsha Teja, consultant gastroenterologist at the hospital.

“While hepatitis A often resolves on its own in young adults, severe cases can cause serious complications. The patient received hydration, rest, liver-protecting medication, and regular monitoring. He recovered completely within four weeks,” Dr. Teja said.

Doctors emphasized that consuming unhygienic food and water can put the liver at serious risk. They advised the public to maintain proper food hygiene, take preventive vaccinations, and seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear.
