University of Hyderabad Students Launch Hunger Strike Against Students Union Removal

Hyderabad, 11 September

Tensions escalated at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) as students launched an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday to protest the administration’s decision to dissolve the Students Union 2024-25 before completion of its tenure and announce fresh elections.

Protesting students, who staged a sit-in at the university gate, alleged that the union was dissolved without following due procedures such as calling a University General Body Meeting (UGBM).

Students Union General Secretary, Nihad Sulaiman M, said that except for ABVP, all student organisations had agreed in a meeting with the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) to hold elections in October. However, the administration allegedly favoured ABVP and scheduled elections this month.

“Why should the university dissolve the union before its tenure? This is the second time the union has been dissolved without the UGBM. Five students are now on an indefinite hunger strike,” he said.

In its defense, the UoH administration said the Students Union 2024-25 was dissolved in line with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines. It also released the election schedule for the Students Union 2025-26.
