US to Deploy 200 Troops to Israel to Monitor Gaza Ceasefire
The United States is sending approximately 200 troops to Israel to oversee the recently agreed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, US media reported on Thursday.
A senior US official stated that the task force will observe and ensure compliance with the ceasefire, reporting any violations. Members of Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish armed forces will also be embedded within the US team, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The troops will remain in Israel, supporting logistics, transportation, engineering, and planning. Officials emphasized that there will be no US boots on the ground in Gaza.
Ceasefire and Hostage Agreement
Israel and Hamas agreed to pause hostilities in Gaza on Thursday, a deal announced by former US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social network, calling it a first step toward “Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.”
As part of the agreement:
Both sides will conduct a hostage-prisoner exchange, releasing approximately 20 Israeli hostages still believed alive, along with the remains of others who died.
Israel’s government confirmed its approval of the historic deal, which comes after a two-year conflict that drew international concern.
The ceasefire is expected to take effect within 24 hours.
US Troop Mission
US officials said the troops could begin deploying immediately. Their role will include:
Facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza
Managing deconfliction mechanisms to ensure both sides comply with the ceasefire
Monitoring security protocols and reporting violations
The deployment underscores Washington’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region while ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches affected populations.
