As Hyderabad continues to witness waterlogging and flooded roads during the monsoon season, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has intensified its HYDRAA Flood Cleanup drive across the city. During the large-scale operation, sanitation workers removed cable wires, plastic waste, mattresses, pillows, blankets, sofas, and several truckloads of garbage from stormwater drains to restore the natural flow of rainwater.
Officials said blocked drains remain one of the primary reasons for urban flooding in several parts of Hyderabad. HYDRAA Removes 13 Truckloads of Garbage at Darussalam
One of the most significant HYDRAA Flood Cleanup operations was carried out at the Darussalam culvert along the Aghapura Nala, which flows through Mehidipatnam, Mallepally and Vijayanagar Colony before joining the Musi River. The area had become heavily clogged with plastic waste and other debris, severely restricting the flow of rainwater. After local residents shared videos of severe water stagnation near the Darussalam culvert on June 21, HYDRAA officials immediately launched an intensive cleanup operation.
To improve access, authorities removed the canal’s guardrail so that heavy machinery, including a JCB excavator, could enter the site.
Within six days, sanitation workers removed 13 truckloads of garbage, significantly improving water flow. Officials said the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next two days.
Cable Wires Choked Drains in Miyapur and Patancheru
Another major HYDRAA Flood Cleanup operation was carried out along a box drain connecting Miyapur and Patancheru.

Using heavy earth-moving equipment, workers pulled out massive bundles of cable wires and other waste materials that had accumulated inside the drainage system.
Authorities said clearing these obstructions is expected to reduce flooding in the surrounding residential and commercial areas during future rains.
Similar Cleanup Conducted in Chandanagar

During the operation conducted on June 25, workers removed heaps of cables and garbage that had obstructed the free flow of stormwater.
Officials noted that indiscriminate dumping of construction waste, plastic materials, and old utility cables continues to be a major challenge for Hyderabad’s drainage infrastructure.
Chandanagar-Lingampally Road Under Bridge Frequently Floods
The HYDRAA Flood Cleanup drive also focused on the Chandanagar-Lingampally Road Under Bridge (RUB), a location known for frequent waterlogging during the monsoon.

To improve drainage, HYDRAA removed iron grills installed over nearby drains and cleared nearly two truckloads of plastic waste from the area.
Officials expect the measures to improve rainwater drainage and minimise future flooding.
Krishnanagar Drain Cleared After Slab Removal
Another critical operation was carried out at Krishnanagar in Yousufguda, where a drain stretching more than one kilometre had been covered with concrete slabs.
The slabs made it difficult for sanitation workers to remove accumulated silt and garbage, allowing waste to build up over time.
HYDRAA removed the slabs, enabling workers to clean the drain thoroughly and restore proper water flow.

Authorities Appeal Against Dumping Waste
Officials urged residents not to dump plastic, household waste, construction debris, furniture, or cable materials into stormwater drains.
They warned that such practices reduce the carrying capacity of drains and significantly increase the risk of flooding during the monsoon season.
HYDRAA stated that the HYDRAA Flood Cleanup campaign will continue in vulnerable areas across Hyderabad to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce the impact of heavy rains.
