Footpath encroachments cleared in Hyderabad’s Old City
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) carried out a footpath clearance drive in Hyderabad’s Old City on Thursday morning, removing alleged encroachments along the stretch from Madina to Puranapul. The operation was conducted under heavy police security to ensure law and order during the demolition.
During the drive, civic officials dismantled sheds and other structures attached to several shops, stating that the action was part of efforts to clear public footpaths and improve pedestrian movement in the busy commercial area. Footpath encroachments cleared in Hyderabad’s Old City.

A large number of police personnel were deployed throughout the operation to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain peace while the demolition was underway.

Traders Express Anger Over GHMC Action
Several affected shop owners expressed disappointment and anger over the demolition. Many traders claimed that the sheds attached to their establishments had existed for nearly 80 years and formed an important part of their businesses.
According to the traders, the structures had been in place for decades, and they believed the action had caused significant financial losses.
Shop Owners Allege No Prior Notice
The affected traders alleged that they were not given any prior notice or intimation before the demolition was carried out. They questioned the manner in which the operation was conducted and asked whether enforcement measures were being implemented only against small business owners.
Some shopkeepers also appealed to the authorities to adopt a more transparent approach before taking such actions in the future.
Demand for Inquiry and Compensation
Following the demolition, the affected traders urged the Telangana government to conduct an inquiry into the footpath clearance drive. They also demanded compensation for those who suffered losses, stating that many businesses were adversely affected by the sudden removal of the sheds.
As of now, GHMC has not issued any official response regarding the traders’ allegations of lack of prior notice or their demand for compensation.
