Telangana Gurukul Degree Colleges to Get UGC Pay Scales; SC Students Studying Abroad to Receive Laptops
In a major boost to higher education and student welfare, the Telangana Gurukul Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) has approved UGC pay scales for degree college faculty, laptops for Scheduled Caste (SC) students pursuing higher education abroad, and the establishment of nine new Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for competitive exam preparation.
The decisions were taken during the third Board of Governors meeting of TGSWREIS, chaired by Telangana Social Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat in Hyderabad.
Nine New Centres of Excellence for NEET and JEE Aspirants
As part of efforts to strengthen competitive exam coaching, the board approved the establishment of nine additional Centres of Excellence across the state.
These centres will identify and train students from Class 9 onwards for national-level entrance examinations such as NEET and JEE, helping them compete for admissions into top medical and engineering institutions.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at providing quality coaching and academic support to students from marginalized communities.

In a significant decision for higher education institutions, the board approved the implementation of University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales for faculty members working in Telangana Gurukul degree colleges.
The move is expected to improve teaching standards, attract qualified educators, and strengthen the academic environment within Gurukul institutions.
Laptops for SC Students Studying Abroad
To support higher education and digital learning, the board also approved the distribution of laptops to Scheduled Caste students pursuing studies abroad.
The initiative is expected to help students access academic resources, online learning platforms, research materials, and communication tools during their overseas education.
AI Courses and Pharmacy College Approved
The board approved the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses at the degree level, reflecting the growing demand for technology-focused education and future-ready skills.

Focus on Quality Education and Student Welfare
Several other student-centric measures were also approved during the meeting, including:
- Introduction of a “Phone Mitra” facility enabling residential students to speak with their parents during holidays.
- Implementation of a common hostel menu across Gurukul institutions to improve nutrition standards.
- Upgradation of Arts and Craft Teachers to Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) status.
- Increase in honoraria for part-time teachers.
- Formation of a committee to pursue NAAC accreditation for Gurukul degree colleges.
- Creation of a dedicated administrative division for degree colleges.
Permanent Buildings for 133 Institutions Proposed
The board also resolved to approach Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for the construction of permanent campuses for 133 Gurukul institutions currently functioning from rented buildings.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar said the government remains committed to providing world-class education to students from marginalized communities in accordance with the vision and ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
