Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 Stalled by Centre, Alleges Telangana CM Revanth Reddy
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has alleged that the Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 project has been stalled by the Central government despite efforts by the state to secure funding and move the expansion forward.
Speaking at a public event, the Chief Minister claimed that delays in approvals and fund transfers have hindered the progress of the much-awaited second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project.
Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 Delayed Due to Centre’s Actions, Says Revanth Reddy
Addressing the issue, Revanth Reddy stated that the cost of Hyderabad Metro Phase-1 increased significantly from approximately ₹15,000 crore to ₹22,000 crore. He also criticized the previous BRS government, alleging that it failed to expand metro connectivity to several key areas of Hyderabad.
According to the Chief Minister, the delay in extending metro services has affected commuters and slowed urban infrastructure development in the city.
L&T Reportedly Projected Annual Losses; Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 Stalled by Centre
The Chief Minister said that Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which developed and operates the Hyderabad Metro project, projected annual losses of around ₹400 crore and was reluctant to proceed with further expansion under existing financial conditions.
To address the issue, the Telangana government reportedly arranged a loan worth ₹13,600 crore through the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) at an interest rate of around 4 percent.
However, Revanth Reddy alleged that the proposed transfer of funds was blocked, preventing the project from moving forward.
CM Names Union Ministers in Allegation
The Chief Minister claimed that Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and G. Kishan Reddy were involved in preventing the transfer of funds required for the Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 project.
According to Revanth Reddy, despite the state government’s efforts to secure financial support, approvals and assistance from the Centre have not been forthcoming. -Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 Stalled by Centre
Allegations Against BRS Leadership
Revanth Reddy also alleged that the previous BRS government and its leaders, including K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), played a role in delaying the progress of the Hyderabad Metro expansion.
He claimed that while metro projects in cities such as Ahmedabad and Visakhapatnam received approvals, Hyderabad’s Phase-2 proposal continued to face hurdles.
Regional Ring Road Delay Also Raised
Apart from the metro project, the Chief Minister accused the Centre of delaying the Regional Ring Road (RRR) project, which was announced in 2023.
He questioned the delay in fulfilling promises related to Telangana’s infrastructure development and urged the Centre to expedite pending projects.
During his remarks, Revanth Reddy stated that if political leaders are expected to resign over unfulfilled promises, accountability should apply equally to all governments.
