Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain continues to dominate weather conditions across the state, bringing widespread rainfall, rising reservoir levels, flood incidents, and severe traffic disruptions in Hyderabad. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next 24 hours, urging residents to remain cautious.
The recent spell of monsoon showers has significantly reduced Telangana’s rainfall deficit while creating flood-like situations in several districts.
Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain continues
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert in North Telangana as heavy rain is expected to continue in several districts, including:
- Adilabad
- Kumram Bheem Asifabad
- Mancherial
- Nirmal
- Jagtial
Many places across northern and eastern Telangana recorded between 130 mm and 200 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Bejjur, Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, where 188 mm of rain was received. In Hyderabad, Chandulal Baradari recorded the city’s highest rainfall at 38.8 mm.
Telangana rainfall deficit drops significantly
The Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain comes after continuous monsoon showers helped reduce the state’s rainfall deficit.
According to the IMD, Telangana’s rainfall deficit has improved from 33% two weeks ago to just 10%. However, 13 of the state’s 33 districts still remain rain-deficient.
Among them, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri has recorded the highest rainfall deficit at 65%, while Hyderabad also continues to remain below normal rainfall levels.
Reservoirs fill up after continuous rainfall
The Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain has also led to a sharp increase in water levels across major reservoirs in the Krishna and Godavari river basins.
Heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas has improved reservoir storage, bringing much-needed relief for irrigation and drinking water needs after weeks of below-normal rainfall.
Officials continue to monitor reservoir levels as more rainfall is expected over the coming days.
Bridge washed away; people swept away in floodwaters
Several rain-related incidents have been reported from different districts following the Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain.
In Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, a temporary bridge connecting Kondapalli and Gollagudem villages was washed away after floodwaters intensified. A Bolero vehicle became stranded before local villagers safely rescued those inside.
In Mulugu district, a 40-year-old man was swept away while taking a bath before visiting the Medaram temple. Rescue teams are continuing search operations.
Another tragic incident occurred in Nirmal district, where a 45-year-old tribal woman was swept away by floodwaters while returning home after collecting her pension from a neighboring village.
Hyderabad traffic affected due to heavy rain
The Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain has also impacted Hyderabad, with heavy overnight showers causing waterlogging and traffic congestion across several major roads.
According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, commuters are experiencing slow-moving traffic in the following locations:
- Taj Krishna
- Virinchi Hospital
- Khaja Mansion towards Masab Tank
- Panjagutta Flyover towards Praja Bhavan
Motorists are advised to avoid waterlogged routes and check live traffic updates before starting their journey.
More rain likely across Hyderabad and Telangana
The IMD has forecast that the Red alert in North Telangana as heavy rain will remain in effect as rainfall is expected to continue across Hyderabad and several districts.
Authorities have warned that additional rainfall may result in:
- Waterlogging in low-lying areas
- Overflowing drains
- Localized flooding
- Traffic congestion
- Disruptions to transportation
Residents are advised to stay indoors during intense rainfall whenever possible and follow official weather advisories.
